Yo check it out…

By oscar  //  news  //  4 Comments

Only just recently realised that Randy Jackson of American Idol fame is one of the Jackson 5 but to borrow a phrase;

(on bass)

Yo check it out. Dob in a tagger in Tauranga for scrilla!

I figure this represents an attitude that is becoming more prevelant amongst smaller town NZ. Legislating locally against tagging beyond the national measures already on their way.

Be it a judge, police or council, there is real feeling on tagging within these smaller towns in particular, and the implementation of mechanisms to deal with it. The problem with this one in Tauranga in particular is the criminalisation of first time offenders for what really is a minor crime. If the scope of what a tagger had done was huge then i’m sure they’d pursue criminal damage charges and skip diversion as an option anyway.

For a 18 year old caught doing a couple of tags it becomes a criminal charge impacting upon employment and travel opportunities. If anything locking them in to, or at least prolonging a certain level of life they already operate in. One which generated the tagging in the first place. And hey once you got one charge, you might as well keep collecting them.

Like this guy.

Common assault, possession of herb, indecent exposure, urinating in a public place, etc. The range of crimes for which you can apply for diversion are pretty large (not entirely sure about the assault one). To specifically set aside that of willful damage as a charge for which diversion is no longer applicable seems to indicate justice is at the whim of fashion, media and an apparent resurgent conservatism being embraced by ‘middle’ NZ.

Balls to that.

Still waiting for these kind of places to address the needs of their ‘bored’ youth. Seriously kids, up tools and get your selves to a real city, and not necessarily one in this country. Blam Blam Blam were talking about depression in 81 and the lack of it at that, albeit in a satirical manner. Right now we could be singing there is no repression in New Zealand.

No not a EMO nor Hardcore band. It’s an art show.

Peap and 2Tone collaborate on this show, anyone who saw their work out at Te Tuhi as part of the FunkyRazors exhibition will know this will be good.

The news.

Slept on this for a while, media mole Tove pointed it out, cheers.
Pretty funny story really, the landlord was pretty sporting. It’s not quite the drama of Colours but from what I can remember the spray paint Sean Penn uses on the kids face is also green.

A story about a “hero” judge. If that’s all it takes to be labelled a hero…. I thought that term best reserved for people like Willie Apiata. To his credit if it has in fact worked so dramatically as a deterent then ka pai Hastings. You’re less in danger of being faced by the cultural slur.

“Judge Adeane sentenced Ford Randell, 18, to 28 days in prison. Calling graffiti a “cultural slur”, Judge Adeane warned other graffiti vandals that he would have no qualms handing out more jail time. ”

The dynanmic within small towns is so many miles away from that of the cities, and that clearly extends to graffiti.

This story is pretty cool though a bit confusing. It’s the local paper variety story really, painting one often seen group of protagonists (skaters) as the good guys. And in this case they are, Paul Goldsmith however…

“Mr Goldsmith says the bowl is “in average” condition compared to similar council assets, so is not likely to be upgraded in the next five years. He is impressed with the group’s work.

“It’s wonderful the boys are taking pride in the appearance and maintenance of this community asset,” he says.”

Ok, well done boys (pat on the back) but we ain’t gonna help you, despite your initiative and proactive stance, you’re on your own.

If the Lynfield bowl, and the New Lynn bowl for that matter are ‘average’ condition then your average is fuckin appalling. Council so loath to invest in the youth.

The confusing bit for me anyway, was this,

“Aside from looking bad, the boys say tagging makes the bowl dangerous for skaters.

“We get so annoyed because the paint makes it slippery,” says Jared.”

yet,

“They paint over tagging on the skatebowl and sweep up rubbish and broken glass. ”

I had a skate last week a Tole St bowl, in between showers. It’s by far not my ideal place for a bowl skate but it serves as good a prop as any other (and it’s close). Anyway, while there 5 grommets slammed hard on the concrete, one guy really hurt his shoulder, all because they hit patches of paint used to buff graffiti. The tags you glide straight over but the buff.. look out. I was sweet thanks to many years experience eating it, I know to avoid paint when it’s been raining.

also, any relation to Justin??

This is what I was up to at Tole bowl.
