PIRATES IN THAILAND

By oscar  //  OVERSEAS STUFF  //  No Comments

Ghøstie and Yelz from Wellingtons Pirates Crew took a month out to venture to Thailand and bicycle 900kms from Bangkok to Phuket in May 2014. In 1997 Thailand was unfortunately struck by an economic crisis which lead to builders literally walking off construction sites in therefore leaving many abandoned buildings strewn throughout Thailand which in turn makes for a great destination for a spraycation.

With the tourist season over and the slow onset of the Monsoon season, we chose the perfect time to be in Thailand. Following nothing but a vague path of National Parks and beaches from Bangkok to Phuket, we were helpfully guided by naivety, good karma, healthy currency conversion, google maps and many friendly locals.
Most the time we ended up painting for food or accommodation which in turn lead us to really getting to know the people of Thailand and their culture.

Truly an amazing experience that can’t possibly be summed up in a few paragraphs.

The Street Loves Nana

Kickstart ‘the street loves nana’

‘The street loves nana’ – street art meets ‘nanaish’ handcrafting.

Well-known NZ street artists are making a fence – of street art –  to be shown and sewn at Splore – by festival goers (over a cup of tea). Not in a lounge, but by the sea. Imagine.

Eight images, big ones, are sprayed on to fence mesh and then whoever chooses can come and handsew to help finish these works (and learn a craft at the same time).

Curator (and cat-herder) Margaret Lewis has asked the artists involved to make a work about nanas – their nana, who she is, what she does, what she’s done, what they admire about her, what makes their nana special – after all everyone loves their nana.

“And I hoped the street artists would want to talk about their nanas – they certainly did. The works they are making honour grandmothers everywhere as well as all the things they do for us.”

Of course, every art project is a collaboration. Margaret has not done all this work herself, the project has built its own community of scavengers, builders, stitchers and NZ street artists all helping to make this happen.

Head over to the project Kickstarter HERE..

Wish You Weren’t Here from Wish you weren’t here on Vimeo.

This is the timelapse from the wall TrustMe recently painted. The true meaning of the wall is to encourage discussion around the protection of our natural environment and the pursuit of technology exploring sustainable models of energy production and consumption.

This artwork has now been used to promote activity and contribution to the discussion through the campaign and website http://www.wishyouwerenthere.org.nz/

Please click and share if you wish Anardarko wasn’t here too.

Greetings!

New wall by TrustMe (follow on Instagram as @oltrustola).

An ode to summer and our way of life. Earlier in the year I painted a commission based around the idea “we don’t know how lucky we are”. The scary thing is that a lot of the time I think we actually don’t. A repaint of a CC wall in Ponsonby and based on the great postcard artwork featuring places like “Miami!”

Have included a full wall view for context and a frame from the timelapse that Bobot managed to sneak into behind my back.

Happy holidaze!
